Week 3 Newspapers and Maine Newstand

I started my search in Proquest with "helping the homeless" where I discovered an interesting phrase "supportive housing" which ultimately led me to eldercare robotics in Japan.  I hope I don't have any sci-fi nightmares tonight.  Maine Newstand was the next stop with a repeat of "helping the homeless" resulting in articles about housing for homeless in Portland and Waterville.  The save the search function seemed to work but not the alert button.
The obituary search yielded results but none of my family members I expected to see.  Their deaths ocurred since 2000 and were originally published in 3 of the 5 named newspapers.  I did find out about a WWW II naval ship with my Dad's family name.  I don't think he ever knew about it.

Maine Memory Network is a wonderful resource.  I have attended their informative introductory seminar and wish I had more time for followup.  Windows on Maine is new to me.  I am glad to see the video series preserved here as an accessible educational/cultural resource.

I wish I had a recent experience of sharing about Marvel, it seems that most patrons are busy with reading or checking their email or facebook page.  On the other hand, after a quick look at about a dozen other MARVELous blogs I see a lot of creativity and am trying to figure out a way to find more time to jazz up my my own presentation.

Week 2

Britannica Public Library Edition

In true encyclopedia fashion some topics yield lots of information and others not so much. It was interesting to see many more results for i phone than cell phone.   Now that I've been through this exercise I will try to use it as a resource, but I'm thinking that internet search engines have supplanted even encyclopedia websites.  Twenty years ago we were saying "let's look it up in the encyclopedia" to start a research project or answer a question, now its simply "Google it".  This resource is most useful for the student and the adult looking for information on a specific topic and has the added design capabilities for the curious browser.  An advantage of using Britannica and resources within Marvel is the absence of advertisement excepting links to other websites.

Lesson 1

I'm off to a late start but have crawled out of my safe little box of I don't know anything about blogging onto the playground of internet possibilities.  How difficult could it be to follow simple instructions of experienced tutors?  Judging from the amount and length of Youtube choices I might want to take a deep breath.
The account is set after a few tries for an address not already taken.  The Marvel intro tutorials are great. I have loved using novelist in the past to help suggest titles for patrons seeking something new and different.  I would like to use one search more, tried it with Finland (maternal heritage) and came up with over 600,000 possibililities.  Narrowed search to Finland Coffee and confirmed that the Finns are world's top coffee drinkers and noted a possible connection between coffee consumption and arthritis.  I'm interested in biking so with the Finland biking combination there were over 1800 references with several about the Finnish inventor of the 'kickbike'.  I think I saw one of these in use several years ago while driving through the amish region of Pennsylvania.
